What I'm Watching: Private Eyes

The Show:

Private Eyes

, Season 1, Episode 1

The Moment:

The cutlets

Ex-hockey star Matt Shade (Jason Priestley) meets private investigator Angie Everett (Cindy Sampson) in her messy office. She's just been undercover as a fitness trainer and wears a tank top that plays up her enormous bosom.

"Gotta say, that trainer disguise is a winner," Shade says.

"Gotta say, you hockey players are predictable . . . at any age," Angie shoots back. She catches him still eying her rack.

"Put your hands out," she says. She whips silicon falsies (a.k.a. cutlets) out of her bra and slaps them into his palms.

"Predictable again," he says.

"I had that kid in the palm of my hand until you showed up," she chides him.

He smacks the cutlets together. "Oh, is that what you call these?" he snarks.

Full disclosure, a producer of this show is a friend of mine, so I'll tell you what I asked her: Have TV directors figured out a trick to make Toronto look fantastic or has the city actually become smashing? Between this show and

Sensitive Skin

, with its beauty shots from and of the Toronto Islands, the Big Smoke is displaying enough swoony, glittery angles to give Vancouver a run for its production dollars.

Private Eyes

makes the Gardiner Expressway look sexy and that is saying something.

Obviously, as the episodes roll on, Angie will teach Shade the PI ropes, and (as on

Ballers

) his ex-pro status will get her through posh doors. But cases shmases. This show will live or die on its leads' rat-a-tat repartee. It's

Moonlighting

for the new millennium.

Private Eyes

airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. on Global. Johanna Schneller is a media connoisseur who zeroes in on pop-culture moments. She usually appears Monday through Thursday.

Men's Shapewear Reviews - Equmen Firm Control Shapewear
Men's Shapewear Reviews - Equmen Firm Control Shapewear
Overall, reviews of men's shapewear by this company have been rather positive. The brand name of Equmen is relatively new to the market of shapewear firm control. However, the company's primary aim is to deliver a high performance style that provides a male with a streamlined look to his physique. This goal is accomplished by supporting and contouring a man's body through the manufacturer's garments. Equmen Firm Control Shapewear is available in a tank top style, and it may be purchased in black or white. From its outward appearance, it is indistinguishable from a normal tank top. Therefore, it may be worn discreetly by being layered with another shirt. This shapewear firm control garment is constructed from a nylon blend, and its shaping panels are constructed from a breathable mesh, which allows a man to remain cool and comfortable. It is effective in molding a more streamlined appearance to a man's abs, chest, and waistline. In addition to supporting an individual's core muscles, the garment also improves a man's posture. There are many aspects of this men's shapewear garment that consumers enjoy. Most reviewers of this product complimented the manufacturer's website, stating that it was rather easy to maneuver and the ordering process was simple. The quick delivery time of the order also received positive reviews. Numerous consumers have stated multiple times that the firm body shapers they ordered fit extraordinarily well.Often times, purchasers of firm control shapewear discover that their garments can stretch out over time after being worn or washed multiple times. However, most reviewers have stated that they have not encountered this problem in any degree. Two other common compliments for this product were concerned with the wide variety of sizes available for purchase, including sizes for plus sized men, and reasonable price rates. This men's shapewear garment typically begins at $89.99; however, most consumers believe the price is well worth the results it yields. The most common complaints concerning these firm body shapers were not directed towards the garment itself, but rather at the manufacturer's website. There were several complaints by customers stating that they did not receive their order in a timely manner or received it at all. Other consumers found the surveys they were required to fill out on the website rather annoying. Most reviewers stated that these problems could be avoided by simply ordering the garment through a third party's website. There were also several complaints concerning the shape of the garment; however, these consumers also admitted that they might not have properly read the website's sizing chart. Overall, the majority of consumers were well pleased with their investment.

Just Keep Swimming: How One Woman Survived a Terrifying Night Stranded Off Shore
Just Keep Swimming: How One Woman Survived a Terrifying Night Stranded Off Shore
Lauren Conner laughed when she first slipped off the boat. She, her boyfriend and another couple had spent Sunday afternoon drinking in sunshine and cold beer on the Sassafras River on Maryland's Eastern Shore. They began heading to the dock shortly before nightfall, but as the 21-foot Yamaha motored north through the Chesapeake Bay at 40 mph, the hull struck a wake so hard that Conner fell off the stern. She immediately popped to the surface, unharmed but embarrassed that perhaps she'd drunk a few too many bottles of Flying Dog lager. Conner, 32, expected some teasing from her companions as she watched the boat stop and turn back toward her. At any moment, she was sure, they'd find her.No more than 40 yards away, she screamed through the stiff wind. When that didn't work, she stripped off her white shorts and waved them. Her boyfriend, Scott Johnson, frantically scanned the surface, but the fading sun betrayed him. The low light flashed across every wave, creating a kaleidoscope of false hope. Minutes passed, and he began to fear that she'd hit her head and sunk. Johnson called 911 and remained on the phone to navigate rescuers toward his position. He lit a flare and held it up as clumps of the fiery red substance dripped off, scorching his hand and head.Meanwhile, Conner, now aware she was in serious danger, eyed a wide yellow buoy and swam toward it, hoping she could cling to the sides until help arrived.Just as Conner realized that its shell was too slick to grip, the rescue boats drew near. She could see their blue lights flickering in the distance, so she pulled off her maroon tank top to flap in the air.By then, though, it was too late. Darkness surrounded her. With a dozen boats and a helicopter unable to find his girlfriend, Johnson began to fear he'd never see her again - and he blamed himself."What," he thought, "am I going to tell her kids?"In so many ways, though, the life she'd endured - one consumed by chaos and death - had prepared Conner for the most harrowing night of her life. Her will, she knew, wouldn't easily break.Lauren Conner is a survivor."Just keep swimming"She faced a choice: Tread water and hope she'd be rescued, or swim toward a strip of green on the horizon.Conner still held the tank top from her CrossFit gym in her hand. An image of a warrior appeared on the back. The shirt was her favorite. She let it go."Lauren," she said aloud, "you are not going to die out here."Conner, now only in a bikini, headed for land, helped by a current that was drawing her toward it. Still, she had no idea that the beach was about two miles away - or whether her legs would give out before she reached it.She recalled what she'd long told her children in moments of fear: "As long as you can float, you won't drown."So, she rolled onto her back and started to kick.Few things were consistent in her youth, other than the water. Both of her parents struggled with addiction, and her mom spent many nights in jail because of it.Not long ago, Conner tried to remember how many different places she had lived as a kid. She quit counting around 40.One of six children, Conner slept at times in cars, foster homes, her dad's office. Always, though, she would find her way to a pool or a river, a lake or a bay.Her twin sister, Stefanie, thought of that, too, as she consoled Conner's 11-year-old son, Ethan Simpson. Much of the family had gathered after word spread about Lauren's disappearance. Stefanie had vomited when she first got the call but knew she couldn't let Ethan see her break down. She reminded him what Conner always said - just keep floating."What if she's not floating?" he asked her. "What if she's under the water and they can't see her?"Beneath a deep purple sky, Conner sang a tune from "Finding Nemo" - "Just keep swimming, just keep swimming" - because it helped her focus on one stroke at a time. She joked to herself about how absurd the situation was, because jokes had always provided comfort in the worst times. She pleaded with Jesus to save her, because she believed He was listening.Mostly, she thought about the four kids she calls her own: Ethan and his 15-year-old sister, her 17-year-old stepdaughter and Johnson's 5-year-old girl."I cannot let these kids down," Conner told herself, because she knew what it felt like to be let down. She'd raised hell in her childhood, often because no one was around to stop her. But she changed as adulthood approached. At 15 -a year before she had her first child -Conner's father was walking home from a bar in Baltimore when he fell from a train track and broke his neck.At 18 -soon after Conner had taken custody of her two younger siblings -her mother overdosed on heroin.Conner didn't give up, even when people expected her to, because she couldn't let her kids down. She went to cosmetology school and, in 2007, became a hair stylist. For the past seven years, she's worked for herself and now runs her own chair at a salon in Bel Air, Maryland."You just do what you have to do to survive," Stefanie said. "That's just the attitude we've always had."But there were moments on the water, Conner said, when survival felt unlikely. Her energy waning, she turned over at one point to see how far she was from land."I'm not even close," she thought. As Conner paddled on, the waves grew, pushing her head beneath the surface and forcing water into her mouth. In brief moments, Conner sensed that she was drowning. Then, suddenly, the tips of her left foot's toes felt something.Mud.About midnight, Johnson said, Maryland Natural Resources Police brought him on shore, where he filled out an incident report.About an hour later, he said, officers sent him home. By that point, at least four agencies were searching for Conner. When he pulled up to their house in Aberdeen, Md., the lights were still on. He sat in his truck for 20 minutes, unaware that Stefanie had already picked Ethan up. Johnson couldn't bear to face him.He knew, too, that Conner's family was struggling to understand his explanation about what had happened. How, if she'd just fallen off, had no one found her?"This is on me," he thought. "One hundred percent, this is on me."He spent a sleepless night in their bedroom - her photo on the night table, her painted coconut from their trip to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic nearby, her Jeep Compass in the driveway outside his window.Johnson answered every call from a number he didn't know, expecting to hear a voice tell him that Conner's body had been found.About five miles away, Stefanie sat in the driveway of a friend's house and smoked a menthol 100. She typed out a text that she'd begun to doubt her sibling would ever read."Lauren. Sister," she wrote. "My twinny. My inspiration. My best friend. I love you."She couldn't recall ever being more distraught."We lost our mom. We lost our dad," Stefanie said later. "That was nothing compared to this."Conner had reached Spesutie Island's beach overwhelmed with relief but still unsure of her fate. Rusted white signs warned that the area, which is part of the Army's Aberdeen Proving Ground, is used to test weapons.Hoping to find someone, she walked north, climbing barefoot over rocks and fighting off swarms of horseflies. Exhausted, she made a bed of leaves - her "bird's nest" - on a concrete slab. Conner shivered so violently that her jaw hurt. The moment reminded her of a winter in Baltimore when, around age 14, she slept one night in an abandoned building. At sunrise, she walked back toward the beach. With no boats in view, Conner was heading into the brush when she spotted a raspberry bush. It was a good omen, she thought. One of her favorite childhood memories was picking them at her grandmother's home in Pennsylvania.Conner trudged farther inland, finally reaching a path that led to a road. Certain that her family believed she had died, Conner was desperate to reach them.Minutes later, she spotted an orange truck driving toward her. Then, the tears came.Candy Thomson, spokeswoman for the Maryland Natural Resources Police, had been up for about an hour by then. As she made her coffee, Thomson formulated in her mind how she would announce the news of the year's sixth boating fatality. Then a text from an investigator arrived."Girl found," the message said. "Can u believe it?"Magda Jean-Louis contributed to this report.Copyright: Washington Post
Rio Olympics 2016: Why the Beach Volleyball Uniforms Vary
Rio Olympics 2016: Why the Beach Volleyball Uniforms Vary
It is a truth universally acknowledged that the Olympic Games are a great opportunity to perve on the incredible bodies of athletes from around the world. Sure, the Games can also teach us lessons about hard work, determination and national pride, but what we're all really here for are long, lingering shots of chiselled abs. Beach volleyball is a great perving sport - if you're a straight man or a lesbian. Female volleyball players get around in itsy bitsy bikinis, are always bending over and frolicking in sand. They look phenomenal. But it isn't as fun if you're a straight woman or a gay man, because the male players are covered up in baggy tank tops and knee length shorts. So in the interests of perving equality, news.com.au asked the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), the sport's international governing body, to explain why the men and women's uniforms are so different. According to the federation's beach volleyball rule handbook, the official FIVB beach volleyball women's uniform "consists of "tops and bikini bottoms AND eventual accessories", while the official men's uniform "consists of tank top and shorts AND eventual accessories". "The FIVB maintains a strong emphasis on the production of beach volleyball uniforms and accessories to help athletes enhance their performance, as well as to ensure an attractive and coherent look at all FIVB events and giving branding opportunities to the promoters," the handbook states. "Women athletes must wear bikini bottoms that are in accordance with the diagram, be a close fit and be cut on an upward angle toward the top of the leg. The women's tops (a crop top design) must fit closely the body as well and the design must be with deep cutaway armholes at the back, always respecting the space for the required brandings." There are strict rules about the size and placement of sponsor names, which might explain why male competitors are required to wear shirts - because they need somewhere to display the advertisers. "The athlete shorts must not be baggy," the handbook says. "For all athletes the bottom of the shorts must be above the knee cap. The men's tank tops must fit closely to the body and must be sleeveless, respecting the space for the required brandings." As we saw when Egypt played Germany each other earlier this week, there are alternative outfit options available for female players. These a tank top or t-shirt and shorts, or long sleeves and pants. Australia's female beach volleyball Olympians - Nicole Laird, Taliqua Clancy, Louise Bawden and Maria De Artacho del Solar - have all chosen to wear the bikini-style uniform. No Australian male players qualified for Rio.
The Worst Coachella Style Guide
The Worst Coachella Style Guide
Hipsters, prepsters, gypsters, pipsters, spinsters, sisters, masters and all other "sters" of America: It's time to celebrate life and music and spirit animals and visual art in the desert of California with other like-minded individuals! That's right! Get your suitcase ready because it's time for you to pack your bags for Coachella! Bros and chicks, it's finally time for our favorite annual music festival! So, obviously, the real most important part of Coachella is compiling some epic outfits for each day of the fest. I mean, if you want to meet your future spouse in a pair of acid-washed overall shorts and a neon orange tank top and moccasins and a Banksy tattoo on their wrist, then you are in luck! This is the place for you!Let me tell you why I'm qualified to provide you with a Coachella style guide: My love for Coachella is hardcore. It's a lot like when Angelina Jolie was dating Billy Bob Thornton. I want to aggressively make out with Coachella in public and I want to wear a vial of Coachella's blood around my neck. Coachella's blood would be made out of, like, pizza, MDMA, glow sticks and sweat. And a sweatband. And bong water. It's like disgusting but also amazing.Anyway, we were talking about Coachella fashion. All those other fashion guides are so stupid. Um, obviously I packed a cross-body bag! Duh, of course I have a hat! I have like five hats! I'm going to be rotating them on an hourly basis! I am a hat enthusiast!Want my fashion advice? Now that you know my qualifications, you probably do -- so here's my suggestion: Just be you. Let your freak flag fly. Be free! Find your spirit animal! What color is your mood ring? Think about it. (Also, it might rain Friday night and you know your mom would be pissed if you forgot sunscreen all weekend.)Now is the part where I tell you the outfits I have planned for each day of the fest:Friday DayIt's the first day at Coachella and I want to make an impression. I'm going to wear like a super sick badass pair of tie-dye neon pink super short jorts (jean shorts, duh), turquoise-detailed cowboy boots and a light grey tank top crop top with a bird and a Southwestern-symbol-type-Kokopelli-type deal on it and a pair of the biggest Ray Ban reflective aviator sunglasses I can get my hands on. And like I might wear a headband. I don't know. The headband could overdo it.Friday NightI'm going to get so super serious about my outfit Friday night you guys you are going to flip out. It's going to be like exactly what I wore Friday during the day except now instead of jorts I am going to wear Cerulean Blue jodhpurs but they're like, Lululemon jodhpurs, which makes it cool but not too cool. And you know those desert temps drop at night so I'm going to wear my Chambray Denim Blazer. I'll also have on earrings made out of glowsticks. I call the look "'80s Equestrian Business-Llady."Saturday DaySaturday is a big day. I want to look my best and send the "I'm one of those chicks who would totally hook up outside at a dirty music festival " vibe. So I'm going to wear a suede one-piece bikini bathing-suit thing that has cut-outs on the sides and then a sheer eyelet lace mullet dress over it (party short length in the front, formal enough for a black tie wedding length long in the back) and gladiator sandals and just a full Native American headdress.Saturday NightEverything I was already wearing minus the Native American headdress. Sunday DaySunday's the last day. It's also kind of like the last day of a super intense juice cleanse but the opposite so comfort is key. I'm going to wear some '80s track shorts that I bought at American Apparel but they may as well be from the '80s they just look so '80s. I'm going to have on this totally adorable seersucker J. Crew bikini that I swear I have had since middle school and I'm going to work super hard to get the best tan ever because I have to go back to L.A. on Monday! But over the bikini top I'm going to be wearing a crop top off-the-shoulder tee with fringe that's white and says BACK TO THE FUTURE on it because that is so meta. And I have this old fanny pack I decorated with puffy paint, it's no big deal really I'm just pretty into arts and crafts, but that's going to be my purse for the day. I just want my arms to be free so I can get really loose when I'm grooving to all the good vibes on the polo fields Sunday. And I'm going to be crushing the sickest pair of Old School Nike Reebok Hightops you've ever seen on Pinterest!Sunday NightTime to just bask in the glory of a successful Coachella 2012 weekend with my most comfortable onesie. It's like a Union Jack suit but it's royal purple and without the butt flap and it's from some trendy boutique store with a name I don't remember, but it's on some street that's cool but not too cool like Melrose or Abbot Kinney. It's like a blanket of love. A lot like Coachella.Okay, so I'll see you guys on the fields of Indio! If you recognize me based on any of the above outfits then you are my new favorite stalker on my list of favorite stalkers -- and also, this was a joke. I'll be naked wearing only body paint all three days.Peace, love and music fests for all!
Urban Outfitters' Lord Ganesh Duvet Cover Upsets Hindus
Urban Outfitters' Lord Ganesh Duvet Cover Upsets Hindus
Hindu critics say Urban Outfitters' new duvet cover featuring Lord Ganesh is insensitive to their faith and have asked that the item be pulled. The cover, available online for $129-169, depicts the elephant-head Hindu deity who symbolizes wisdom.Criticism of the retailer comes barely a week after Wal-Mart, Amazon and Sears came under fire for selling a commemorative poster featuring a photo from the Dachau concentration camp's main gate.Rajan Zed, president of Universal Society of Hinduism, has asked Urban Outfitters to take the duvet cover off the market. "You can put him in a frame and on the wall. That is fine," Zed said. "But not to be put on the bed, on which you lie and your feet will go on. That is very inappropriate."Zed urged Urban Outfitters to remove Lord Ganesh socks from stores in December. The retailer responded by quickly pulling the socks and issuing an apology.Urban Outfitters, which sells other Lord Ganesh items, including a tank top, pillows and wall tapestry, declined to comment.Murali Balaji, director of education at the Hindu American Foundation, said he doesn't think the duvet cover is offensive but it worries him about the future. "They really don't get it," Balaji said, and he predicted that what he called the company's "hipster racism" will continue.Urban Outfitters has upset other religious groups. In 2012, the company sold a shirt that resembled the yellow Star of David patch Jews were forced to wear in Nazi Germany. And in March the retailer was asked to remove a shirt that said "Jesus, I'm Drunk" with a picture of Jesus holding a beer.In the future, Balaji wants Urban Outfitters to talk to Hindu community leaders before putting items involving their religion on shelves.Copyright: For copyright information, please check with the distributor of this item, Religion News Service LLC.

Mum Drops Three Dress Sizes but Only Loses Less Than One Kilo
Mum Drops Three Dress Sizes but Only Loses Less Than One Kilo
A mother of four and passionate weightlifter has shared an amazing photo of her physical transformation on social media - revealing that she has only lost one kilo (2 pounds) even though her body looks radically different. Adrienne Osuna, 31, who blogs about her healthy habits, went through years of yo-yo dieting from middle school to adulthood, losing weight before gaining it again and struggling with binging. But after four pregnancies, during which she managed to run two half-marathons, the Santa Maria, California mum quit dieting four good and started lifting heavy weights - something she says has transformed her metabolism, her shape and her approach to health and fitness. The photo of Adrienne's progress, which shows her posing in a pink tank top at a size 16 and at a size 10, first appeared on her Instagram account seven weeks ago and resurfaced Tuesday on social media. Many praised the married mum for showing that the number on the scale does not adequately reflect fitness. Muscle is denser than fat, which means a pound of muscle takes up less room than a pound of body fat. This is why the mother of four boys can look so different in each photo and yet weigh the same. One woman said in a comment on Adrienne's Instagram that the photo had helped her not to feel discouraged on her own fitness journey. "Seeing how numbers don't show progress but your body instead, has me motivated now more than ever!" she wrote. "I rely so heavily on the scale numbers, but can now see it's all in hard work!" Other comments, however, weren't as positive. "When I posted this picture last time the amount of comments I got calling me a liar, saying it was photoshopped, or that it's two separate people, was crazy and made me not want to post another like it!" Adrienne said on Instagram next to the transformation snap. But she received a string of direct messages from other women telling her the photo had helped them stop obsessing over the scale and had empowered them to continue on their fitness journey at times when they were tempted to give up. These messages, Adrienne said, convinced her to keep sharing pictures of her transformation. The mother, who is also a photographer and wants to become a nurse, now lifts weight four times a week, with two sessions focused on her upper body and two dedicated to her legs. On top of that, she goes two or three cardio workouts per week and practices yoga. Adrienne has urged other women not to be intimidated by the weight room and to try out lifting. "Will you be the only girl in there? Maybe. I often am. Does it matter? Nope," she wrote on her blog. "Everyone in there is there for the same reason. No one is better than anyone else, and everyone is willing to help." She also told aspiring lifters not to be discouraged if they can't keep up with their fitness routines perfectly - and, of course, if the scale is not budging. "It's not all or nothing. If you miss one day, go the next. If your diet isn't perfect that's okay, keep going," she wrote. "Don't obsess over the scale. You are focusing on your body building muscle and losing fat. The scale may not change!"

Striped shorts can add a smart, edgy vibe to the look and make for smart casuals at work. They can also be worn to a 'spa-rty'. Remember, clashing prints are out. Always wear them with a plain coloured top or T-shirt.Style hint: Accessorise the look with metal jewellery - try long chains, bracelets or bangles as well as thong sandals.High-waisted More comfortable with the high-waisted style? Don't worry, that isn't old-fashioned and passé. Also called 'longs' as opposed to shorts, these are very much in vogue. They show off a more elongated leg look. A simple tank top or cropped top go best with them.Style hint: Try a monochrome number with peach or cream high-waisted shorts and a matching jacket.Lace shorts Don a pair of lace shorts for some light, feminine charm. Best part is, these can be worn in a whole lot of vibrant hues like teal, yellow, orange, pink and red.Style hint: Our vote goes to classic white with a solid colour top, envelop clutch and sandals.Pool shorts Not quite the bikini, pool shorts are when you want to wear something longer at the pool and still look stylishly cool. Made from a stretchy fabric, these can be worn in a variety of colours and prints.Style hint: Since this is worn by the pool, the only accessory you might need are your glares. A beaded necklace and flip-flops are fun additions, too.Gingham styleA fave with Hollywood icons Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn, the gingham print is peppy and chic at the same time. Bloggers love the trend and it's also huge on the ramp right now.Style hint: Wear red or blue gingham-checked shorts with a classic white top or tie-up T-shirt. Minimal jewellery and a pair of glares complete the look.
